To me, this movie is perfection.
Excellent adaptation.
There are better movies of two hours length. I loved the actress'performance.
It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties. It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
I enjoyed this film quite a bit. Of course it's far from perfect but it is pretty good the way it is. The movie poster is so misleading because it only shows Vince Vaughn and Kevin James but this is not your typical lighthearted Vaughn/James comedy vehicle but actually an ensemble dramedy with some dark humor. Jennifer Connelly and Winona Ryder are just as important in this film as Vaughn and James, so they should be on the poster. I suspect many people expected a very different, more comedic movie and rated it low because it didn't meet those expectations. The ratings should be higher if you ask me. Give this movie a try if you can enjoy unconventional comedy/drama hybrids.
(Plot) A man finds out that his best friend's wife is having an affair behind his back, and will do anything to uncover the truth. The only thing that truly stuck out about this movie was Channing Tatum's hilarious cameo. Other than that, this movie was exactly how I pictured it was going to be; completely mediocre with very little laughs or fun. How is it that the extremely talented and luscious Jennifer Connelly is in this movie? Its way out of her league, and it was so disappointing to see her waste her talents in this. Same goes for Winona Ryder, even if her career has faltered a bit. I can't stand Kevin James, and I dislike Vince Vaughn. I gave this a chance, hoping I might end up being proved wrong. It turns out my gut instincts were right on this one. It's crude, unfunny, and a film that shows nothing but contempt for its audience. It truly makes me sad that movies like this get released often these days and make copious amounts at the box office. Except this one wasn't so lucky It bombed somewhat, making only 48 Million.Final Thoughts: If it shows contempt for its intended audience, why not show nothing but contempt back for it? I'm easily amused, and it still didn't get the job done. Not recommended3.5/10
I've nearly always enjoyed all four of the leads in this film, and I thought they all delivered pretty strong performances here. A few scenes were pretty poor (using "gay" as a derogation is potentially offensive, the awkward/inappropriate toast was just a cheap way of making the audience uncomfortable--soo tired of directors substituting awkward discomfort for humor), but overall, I was pretty happy with this film. It's not a pure comedy, but it has its comedic moments. Mostly, though, the film is about relationships, and it was refreshing to see a film that allowed the characters to resolve their conflicts in such a healthy way. My biggest concern with the plot is that I can't see how Vaughn's character got himself into such a mess if he's mature enough to handle everything so well. Why didn't he just confide in Connelly's character from the beginning? It makes some sense that he hides it at first, only because he didn't want to reveal his intention to propose, but after she confronts him after his awkward toast at her parents' anniversary, there is no sane reason for him not to confide, and instead he walks out to sleep at his office? That made no sense. Otherwise, a nice dramatic/romantic comedy.
No having seen a trailer for this, I could only go with the stars as to what kind of movie this was. Given the two leads, this seemed to me like it would be a comedy. Sure, Vince Vaughn has done some dramatic roles, but to me he is a comedic actor first, and Kevin James is strictly comedic. After this movie ended, I was confused; was this supposed to be a comedy or a drama? If it was supposed to be a comedy, then it wasn't very funny, and if it was a drama, then it was rather light. Further muddying the waters was Channing Tatum's character, whose personality seems to change with each line; in one he is a violent lunatic, the next he is a touchy-feely type. All in all, this was 110 minutes of wasted time, except for the scenes at Blackhawks games (I'm a fan).
