Sadly Over-hyped
I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
Blistering performances.
Lot of good actors in this one. It was interesting with a twist I didn't see coming.
this movie had me intrigued until just before the end, when the antagonist received a phone call during his 'date'. with so few characters in the storyline, that was a dead giveaway, making the ending uber predictable. i don't think omitting the phone call would have worked. it was necessary in introducing the idea of a 2nd antagonist. but there should have been more options as to who the 2nd antagonist might be. the slim pickings made it just too easy. either way, i saw it coming and it just sucked the fun right out of the mystery. admittedly, the movie was gripping until then, but that is not enough. so, out of a 10, it gets a 5 for keeping my interest, but it forfeits a 5 for losing it.
The Factory is a retread of many other serial killer films you've probably seen in your life. There is nothing really original about it (Aside from a twist ending that I didn't care about) and to be honest it isn't all that interesting in the whole scheme of things. Let's go over the complaints, since there isn't much to praise. Abby (Mae Whitman) is one of the most annoying victims I've ever seen. She's supposed to be somebody we sympathize with due to the torturous things she goes through, but I couldn't stand her whiny performance. She's insolent, disrespectful, and not very likable. Yet we are supposed to care for her? I was also disappointed by the lack of chemistry between Cusack & Charisma Carpenter. They just didn't click as partners, and I didn't really buy Carpenter in her role, either. Despite its gritty feel, I didn't really feel much intensity at all. The film throws a lame twist ending our way. Maybe it was because I just didn't care anymore by the time it happened, but it didn't really affect me as much as it probably should have. Cusack is one of my favorite actors, but there is not much he can do here. He tries his hardest, but succumbs to a crappy script. Charisma Carpenter is nice to look at, but that's about it, and I've already expressed my disdain for Mae Whitman as Abby.Final Thoughts: Be my guest if you wanna see this one, but there are many other flicks in this genre that is much better suited for you. It lacks suspense, thrills, and proper pacing. I didn't care for it all4/10
From the very start, reading the description here on IMDb, I thought I had this movie figured out. Typical "cop makes it personal" story because the criminal involves his family. Well, maybe that describes this movie, but doesn't define it. There are several twists in the plot that I couldn't guess (and I am fairly good at that) and I couldn't have come up with the ending at all. I found John Cusack's performance very real, but just adequate. I have seen him do better filling in and rounding out a character. I hadn't seen any of the other actors so they were unknown to me. There are a few parts of the story and background that might require a bit more of a suspension of disbelief than some viewers can give, but if you can get through the rough parts in the script, you will be rewarded at the end. Overall, a very well paced, well edited, well directed film that should have received more attention than it did. A good pick for "movie night".
