I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.

Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

The movie's not perfect, but it sticks the landing of its message. It was engaging - thrilling at times - and I personally thought it was a great time.

Dot (Camilla Belle) is a deaf mute orphan living with her godparents, the Deers. She's a loner at school, and pushed around by cheerleader Nina Deer (Elisha Cuthbert) and mean girlfriend Michelle Fell. The Deers are hiding some very dark secrets. The mother Olivia Deer (Edie Falco) is hooked on prescription drugs. Dot discovers Paul Deer (Martin Donovan) is sexually sleeping with daughter Nina. Dot is partnered with basketball star Connnor Kennedy (Shawn Ashmore) in class. He becomes intrigued when he sees her playing a piano. Then Nina discovers Dot may actually be able to hear.Dot being deaf or not being deaf is the best concept in this thriller. It's too bad that it's completely ruined by her narration. By itself, the narrations are boring and lame. The worst part is that it takes away from her deafness. The movie needs to play up her deafness, not play it down. She needs to do more signing and fake deaf talking. The mean girls should be trying to fake her out. Nina's discovery should be pushed back a bit. This should have been a big plus but the narration makes it a minor fail. The psycho sexual thriller is part camp and part awkward. Director Jamie Babbit never really nails down the tone. This all starts with the deaf issue. After failing so badly, the rest of the movie struggles to recover. This could have been an interesting thriller but the execution really screws it up.

The director of this pile of garbage must a be man-hating lesbian...There is no other explanation for how someone could be that sick and full of spite towards men.The film can be summarized as a long two-hour rape of our senses, feelings and emotions.Curiously, at the same time as the director demonizes men, she uses the body figure and the nymph-like presence of the Elisha Cuthbert as a way to titillate the lesbians in the audience... go figure!Stay away from this piece of garbage. It will kill a lot of your brain cells. This is a movie for man-hating pseudo-intellectual psychotic lesbians..

So so pleased i bought this after being recommended it on amazon. I just thought it would be a bit of a let down type American pie film but was pleasantly surprised. The film is about Nina. Miss beaufitul, her best friend. Miss dying to have a fella of importance and to ensure Nina doesn't leave school a virgin... such is USA of today... Anyway. In to Nina's seemingly idilic life enters a distant relative a newly bereaved dumb mute girl the family decided to take on for their own reasons, probably being self patting on back for such a brave and selfless action... You see the family, has in fact many flaws, Mother has a legalised drug addiction and daddy is not the gentleman he pretends to be, It is very difficult to watch in bits but is very accurate of human nature and how two three plus dimensional it can be, how people turn things to their own devices. I particularly liked the changing attitude towards Dot when the story unfolds. Very accurate and the way people try so hard to be politically correct in public and in peer groups anything but and in a way i feel her disability is envied and exploited by them, which seems to be why they get so mad later on in the story. well hope you enjoyed my shabby review, and the film further more...

A deaf-mute young woman is adopted by a family that is harboring some dark secret. On the surface, the film looks fabulous, but there's little underneath the surface. Cuthbert is an alluring young actress, as is Belle. Unfortunately, the actress who disrobes in this film is neither of them but Falco (perhaps that's why it's classified as a horror movie). The acting is poor pretty much across the board. The script is flimsy and the dialog is embarrassingly bad. Director Babbit is a veteran of television and it shows. The film plays out like a bad after-school special about a taboo subject. The voice-over narration is meant to be touching but is pretentious.
