Excellent but underrated film
Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
First of all, the fact that imdb score is so low reveals the stupidity of imdb builders once again. Sence is a site where the majority of those who give high scores to popular, cliché and cult films. I do not remember much about the forum. The film was really fluent and pleasing. I had a lot of brains in my brain. I could not see it until I could solve it. I watched it unbelievably. It was an impressive and different film. It's definitely a film to watch. The stereotypes are sinking less than an American film. It's a beautiful thriller.
Although, I did have to watch it more than once to really feel it.John Leguizamo,Hayden Christensen, and Thandie Newton are the only ones left when some sort of dark force takes everyone in the city. They have to keep close to a light source to prevent the shadows from grabbing them. This struggle gets harder as the sun rising in the sky becomes more limited and the shadows play tricks on them in order to lore you into it's clutches. It is the type of movie you don't want to see in the dark or you can get freaked out by the shadows, which is why it's brilliant that Leguizamo's character, Paul opens the movie. Paul's a film projectionist at the local AMC (A big shinning product endorsement and I'm not even sure if this movie played in theaters). Leguizamo also gives, hands down the best performance of all the three adult actors playing a man not fully happy with his lonely existence making him more accessible to be taken by the shadows.Three people along with a boy, trapped in a bar that has the only one light source in the city, trying to figure out what's going on, and attempting to find a new light source in a desperate attempt to see if their love ones still exist. It's actually scary seeing only four people in a empty city trying to fight off the night.Your fright level may depend on your belief system. The film is smart to leave the purpose of the shadows vague, and allow you to come up with your reasoning and what makes you scared. It's decent enough to take a look at.
I expected a fairly B movie experience and I was rewarded with a B+ experience. All the great things about a B movie, with pretty good acting, and a very creepy edge. A lot of "thrillers" or suspense films that run through our horror genre these days have all run to be predictable and not that scary. I give this one 6 stars out of 10 (though I might have given it more for personal preferences) and a very approving nod to the creepiest shadows I have seen in a movie in a while. While humanoid, the shadows don't move like an actor or human shadow but more like a mannequin, and succeeded in giving me the heebie jeebies more than once through the movie.
This is a nice, simply made movie. It features some well known actors that give plausible, if not effective performances based on the limitations of the script. The movie explores spirituality and the supernatural, and shuns the corniness you find in your more typical slasher flicks. Because it requires thinking and reflection, most fans of the horror genre won't appreciate it. However, if you're looking for something that allows for contemplation of profound ideas and certain philosophies of life and the afterlife, then this is the movie for you.Basically, the movie is centered around this massive darkness that is slowly swallowing a Detroit neighborhood. Why is where the fun begins.Highly recommended for us thinkers out there.
