It is not deep, but it is fun to watch. It does have a bit more of an edge to it than other similar films.
Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.
The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
FrankAs much as eerie and intriguing the concept is; which draws most of the viewers in, the plotline pushes them far away with the equal force. The script is a scattered mess that may have its trajectory in mind that it does follow, but the forcibly installed sequences to spend its time and distract the audience until the moment arrives, is not only ludicrous but also off putting. Addition to that, it fails on technical aspects too, like background score and the camera work which has never been more unimpressive. The writing is sloppy and tacky around the edges and has the least intriguing conversation among questionable characters (except for the protagonist; irony) that are projected in here. Lenny Abrahamson has done a decent work on executing this sinking script and helps it sail off easily to the shore even though the editing isn't up to the mark. The performance objective is what satisfies the viewers by a great cast like Domhnall Gleeson, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Michael Fassbender as Frank himself. Having said that, it has its moments where the drama and acting is appreciative that is given a satisfying climax where Fassbender steals the show. Frank is a non-rhythmic musical act that is uneven in its self created pathology and the bubble that it all resides in.
Frank is a relatively unknown and limited released independent film. Starring Domhnall Gleeson (as Jon), an untalented rock-star wannabe, gets a lucky break when, on an English beach, he meets Don (Scoot McNairy), who manages an art-rock band. Furthermore very quickly, Don hires Jon to replace the group's suicidal keyboardist. A gig in Ireland and an album-recording project in a lakeside cabin are on tap.The band is led by Frank (Michael Fassbender wearing a large paper- mache type head mask), whose music reflects mental illness as well as talent and who never takes off his above-mentioned mask. Frank shows kindness and support to Jon, while the other band members tend to dislike him. Also followed by, hostile is theremin player Clara (Maggie Gyllenhaal), who maintains a strong protective (and romantic) interest in Frank. Jon is clueless to Frank's fragility. He also doesn't understand the band's disinterest in commercial success. This film is quite well written and acted well, which is why it is an entertaining watch. Michael Fassbender played as Frank is easily the star and most likable and watchable on screen in this film. The audience is eager to watch whatever he does, and the main reason is with him wearing the mask over his head. The comedy in the film isn't laugh out loud which works here as it is not forced, and more subtle. Frank is relatively short in running time, where they perhaps could have added about 10-15 more minutes, but otherwise the film is quite interesting and unique as it is entertaining.
I truly wanted to like this movie so much. After I saw the trailer I was so excited. However, it turned out to be 90 minutes of gloom and despair with a sad ending. It's true the acting is good if not great but I cannot say I enjoyed this movie at all. For some reason I cannot submit a review with less than 10 lines of text. So I will be blabbering on for the next few. If you're reading this I would like to apologize for wasting your time and hope that my review didn't break your balls. I am only at 8 lines as of now so I will still be blabbering on for a bit. I am currently watching the new X-Men: Apocalypse film and will apparently not be doing a review on it considering I can't find enough content to write. That's all for this guy.:(
I never watch a movie twice within a two week period. Did this time.Frank reeled me in. Quirky and clever.Well done. Gave it a 9.Some people said not enough music - OK - kinda thought that too - but the story is really cool. More important than 1.5hrs of music.Really good actors - I had no clue that one from 'Halt and Catch Fire' was in the movie (aside - very cool show). Sorry don't know the actor's name - but he is really good. Also enjoyed the various locations. Europe and Texas - cool Cinematography.Overall, an awesome movie. One of the best I've seen in a a long time.
