It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

I can understand why this movie is so highly regarded by critics. But deep down, I'm just your average movie enthusiast that still loves stupid movies with badass guys shooting bad guys with big guns. Sure there are time I'm really into some cult movies, but they are cult for a reason and that's because most people don't enjoy them, because most people love stupid movies with badass guys shooting bad guys with big guns. It's unfair, but that's how it goes. When watching The Duke of Burgundy I never expected it to be a mainstream movie, but even so I can't help feeling let down. However, let me start by what's good in this movie: The first thing I noticed was the atmosphere. Dark but ironically so, colorful. The slow unravel of the relationship's intricacies and, yet again, slow build up to the inevitable emotional breakdown, were carefully crafted, that is obvious talent right there. Nevertheless, personally, it failed to deliver the emotional impact it promised, leaving no lasting impressions or afterthoughts on the subject the movie was centered on. There was a surreal dream sequence that, in my opinion, did not fit the movie, and even if you can have an interpretation out of it, it felt misplaced and pretentious. On some levels, this movie reminded me of Shame, but where shame got it right, this one felt bland and unclear. As far as enjoyment goes, this movie failed me. It was boring. Good but boring.

Duke of Burgundy takes the concept of old sadomasochistic lesbian movies and digs deeper to the psychology of its characters. The director is trying to do what the legendary Jess Franco and Jean Rollin often did with their lesbo shockers, but he is not as successful. But its a wonderful experiment that works on many levels. The cinematography are acting are very sharp. The plot is thin and not much action takes place and it all could've been a much better short film, but its well written and directed anyway. The most interesting part of the film is the suggestion that lesbianism is a kind of fetish and psychological crutch for emotionally damaged people. He likens its roots to the roots of S&M. This is a very controversial angle in our modern times, but I think its refreshing. Duke of Burgundy is not a sentimental, pandering or fetishistic examination of its subjects. Its a very cold and analytical one. And its interest and sympathy for its characters are more pure than the films that inspired it. I only wish it was as exciting and entertaining as Vampyros Lesbos or Rape of the Vampire. But maybe it wouldn't work as well if it was as exploitative.

'THE DUKE OF BURGUNDY': Four and a Half Stars (Out of Five)Critically acclaimed British drama/erotic thriller flick, written and directed by Peter Strickland. The film tells the story of a lepidopterology student, and her instructor, who also engage in a highly obsessive BDSM relationship. The movie stars Sidse Babett Knudsen and Chiara D'Anna, as it's two leads, and it features a cast of entirely female actors. It was one of the best reviewed films of 2015, by critics, and I highly enjoyed it. Evelyn (D'Anna) is studying lepidopterology, under the tutelage of Cynthia (Knudsen); who is much older. She also appears to work as a maid, in her home. Cynthia is extremely domineering of Evelyn, expecting perfect cleanliness, and punishing her, when she doesn't meet her expectations (in a seemingly sadistic way). Then we learn that the two are romantic sexual partners, as well, and Evelyn has been telling Cynthia how to behave towards her; often giving her scripts, on what to say and do. The expectations Evelyn demands of Cynthia, have actually taken an emotional toll on Cynthia; as she feels she can't continue to meet Evelyn's obsessive needs.Being a fan of femdom, I found the film to be quite fascinating. I could really relate to Evelyn as well; although I'm not nearly as obsessive as she is (or weird). That's why I found the movie to be involving, and highly entertaining; but it's also a great love story, and a powerful examination of how that way of life can effect the people involved (especially when they want different things). It's beautifully directed, in a style reminiscent to classic films (of yesteryear), and the two lead performance are both great in it as well. I also like how the filmmakers casted all women, in every single role. It's a weird film, but it's not as sexual as you might think; it's a lot more about the psychology of sex, than it is about showing it in great detail. It's definitely a good film; the critics are right about this one!watch our movie review show 'MOVIE TALK' at: https://youtu.be/A1MyBFioKXM

This movie tries to be so many things, and fails at all, the one thing it excels at is being a complete waste of time. The people writing good reviews for this film are either somehow affiliated with it, or truly have no idea what a decent movie is.The entire movie is based on little scripts the two women rehearse, and there is maybe three of them, and then it's a simple matter of 'rinse and repeat'.I have NO IDEA why the director thought that a woman peeing into another woman's mouth would be in any way appealing to anyone, apart of course for those out there that are extremely kinky, of course you don't see this, thank god for that, but you do hear it.As I mentioned the movie just repeats itself over and over again until it ends, it's just utter crap, and there are moments in the film where there is insanely annoying sounds with obscure images in the background, it's like the director/editors had completely run out of ideas and put these bits in to simply make the movie longer, of course they would have been doing us all a favor had they simply left them out, or better still, never made the movie in the first place.ABSOLUTE GARBAGE!.
