Don't listen to the Hype. It's awful
Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.
Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
I can't believe I wasted a few hours watching this ridiculous movie. I can not get over how unbelievable the script and story of this movie. The scenes in which they have dinner in silence is so cringe worthy. After the silent dinner, she suddenly has a connection with him? And she goes to his house in the middle of the night. Does she not have any friends? And when we patiently wait for Lisa to unwrap her present from George, I almost fell asleep and then she says to George, "thanks for not rushing me". As if it was a big deal that Matty when he gave her a beautiful watch wanted to help her unwrap the present because she looked like she was struggling. Honestly. Lisa is the most unlikable character. She should have stayed for the therapy sessions and got herself sorted.Lisa is in a relationship with a guy named Matty who is committed to her, asks her to move in, has his life all together and is sweet, funny and supportive and then she chooses George guy who is being investigated and might be going to prison and lives in a dump. He has nothing together and he bought her play doh for her birthday. Yes it had a cool but fake sounding story.. which in all honestly, didn't really apply to her or her situation.. She falls in love with George who after only a few awkward encounters in which you see no chemistry and no interesting rapport. If you want to yell at your TV because she made poor decisions and because the movie is so lame, then sure watch it.
I thought that with a great cast, including the queen of Rom-Coms Reese Witherspoon, it would be an enjoyable movie. Not necessarily a good movie but an entertaining movie that the audience enjoys watching. I was disappointed when this overly long movie did not deliver. Not much happened yet it was dragged out. I think part of this is because there are so many stories going on that are trying to be relevant to one another, but fall short. Also, the dialogue was weird and forced. Some of the communication exchanged was awkward or I just did not get it. I think it was supposed to be funny, but it just wasn't. I would not watch again.
Giving this movie a low rating is, as the King would say in 'The King and I,' a 'puzzlement.'James L. Brooks always delivers. Maybe you won't want to hear the messages, maybe you're not in the mood, but you will accept delivery. Every few years, I watch this film and forget the details of the plot. That means there will be fresh tears. Tears of happiness but here comes the waterworks! Paul Rudd is, as usual, the perfect 'chick flick' hero. A little TOO perfect for some. Yet he has the comedic chops to lift a scene that threatens to bog down in sentimentality.Reese Witherspoon does something that must be very challenging: she acts the role of the athlete working on developing her thick skin while also being soft and appealingly feminine. What complicates her character is her tendency to talk through all her feelings while evaluating all her feelings. Too much? Even her character has to stand back now and then and say, 'Enough already...' I don't understand how this wonderful script with these wonderful actors failed to add up to a huge box office hit. I've finally come up with this: it's too many smart (even brilliant) ideas in a movie that dating couples are going to wish was just a bit of fluff between dinner and bar-hopping. There's so much to think about from the conflicts presented that it just might happen that the evening ends up being a thoughtful debate about futures and hopes and vulnerabilities. Who wants that on a date? Uh, NO ONE!And there you have it.(If you are not on a date, see the movie. Have some Kleenex handy for a scene or two. Get ready to laugh because there are very funny scenes, too.)
Directed, Written & Produced by the prolific James L. Brooks, 'How Do You Know' is A Worthy Romantic-Comedy, that has a charm of its own. And The Well-Done Performances, only add to its pluses!'How Do You Know' Synopsis: After being cut from the USA softball team & feeling a bit past her prime, Lisa finds herself evaluating her life & in the middle of a love triangle, as a corporate guy in crisis competes with her current, baseball-playing beau.'How Do You Know' is mushy, breezy, funny & ultimately, entertaining. Brooks's Screenplay concentrates on troubled people, whom we, the audience, fall in love with. Their journey together, comes across as sweet & humorous. Brooks's Direction, on the other-hand, as always, is pitch-perfect. Performance-Wise: Reese Witherspoon looks gorgeous & delivers a lovable performance. Paul Rudd is in terrific form.
