So much average
Good story, Not enough for a whole film
Absolutely Brilliant!
It's not great by any means, but it's a pretty good movie that didn't leave me filled with regret for investing time in it.
I will not address the narrative here in any fashion, my comments being limited to the cast and quality of the writing. On the latter the film was mostly good but at times seemed like it could do with a bit less. On the former I loved Alison Brie and Chris Pratt in supporting roles, and Emily Blunt was great, too. Other players were also very good for the most part. But... I felt Segal was a bit flat here, and that and the overall too long length led me to give an at times quite funny film only a 7.
One of the worst movies I've ever seen. Stupid, pointless, not funny and boring. Who in the world thought this was worth exhibiting? Neither of the leads had the least bit of chemistry, not for a minute could you believe they cared for each other. As bad as Jason Segal was, and he was terrible, Emily Blunt was worse. It appeared as if she was in it for a paycheck, and if so, then she should go into another line of work. I suspect that Judd Apatow found a failed script for a TV pilot, thought he could make it work, and his arrogance got the better of him. The film actually ended about 30 minutes in, it meandered about for nearly another two hours. Honestly, if you're on some quest to see what bad script writing is, then watch this junk. It's about the only thing worth doing with it....
I think what makes movies, not necessarily great, but really fun to watch is when the characters are really relatable. You can see parts of your life reflected on screen. And when there's a perfect mix of happy, sad, downright crazy and especially funny thrown in you have an honest and lovable story. Characters Tom, a professional chef played by Jason Segel, and Violet, an aspiring post-doctorate student played by Emily Blunt, compliment each other so well on screen together. At the beginning of the movie they get engaged and every time they start planning their wedding, life gets in the way. People come and go and opportunity comes knocking. When Violet puts herself first, it becomes difficult for them to adjust what was once their perfect life together. The longer they keep pushing the date back, the more the relationship slowly starts to transition. They begin to give themselves up for each other and eventually it's more than either of them can take. I didn't really like that Tom did what he did towards the end of the movie but the fact that you truly believed he felt horrible for it made it more bearable. I took comfort in the reassurance that even when you know you were meant to be with someone, you still have to be ready to give at least fifty percent of all your attention and devotion to more than one cause in your life, at least for a while. Perhaps Tom and Violet simply found each other too early in life. It's an honest, raw, 21st century love story and a pretty good one at that.
I'm not quite sure what I'm missing here, but I thought this was an excellent rom-com and one of the best I've seen in a long time; a pleasant surprise. I laughed a lot more than expected (uncontrollably at times) and I thought Jason Segel and Emily Blunt had great chemistry. The story had depth and was above the typical rom-com fare. The characters were realistic and conveyed with some unexpected authenticity at times, leading to a few surprisingly strong moments in the film. Admittedly, it did drag a bit near the end but I still found it wholly entertaining. As far as these kinds of films go, it hit all the right notes for me. An underrated and very enjoyable film, don't miss this one!Enjoyed my review? Keep in touch! Blog: www.themoviesnob.ca Twitter: @the_movie_snob
