Memorable, crazy movie
I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
It's funny watching the elements come together in this complicated scam. On one hand, the set-up isn't quite as complex as it seems, but there's an easy sense of fun in every exchange.
The biggest problem with this movie is it’s a little better than you think it might be, which somehow makes it worse. As in, it takes itself a bit too seriously, which makes most of the movie feel kind of dull.
Why did they have to ruin an awesome series? They completely moved away from their intense and dark setup in attempt to bring everything to a larger scale. Which not always is the best thing to do, as we can clearly see here, this movie was a complete abomination of the first 2 movies and the story line in general, very disappointing. In this film, on the contrary to its prequels we can see a bunch of boring horror film clichés, everything is blatant and predictable. No tension whatsoever, absolutely 0 tension or suspense. The beginning was extremely boring as you could easily see what is going to happen in brief moments. The cast was horrible too, no likable characters, everybody seemed so dumb and ignorant to the situation, even the main characters. The creators also tried to introduce new mechanics of the possessed people for some reason and it looked as if the virus does not get transfered via blood or saliva anymore? Why is that? What annoyed me the most was the decision of putting romantic music in between supposedly intense scenes and fights, what is all of that about? Did they want to turn this series into a romantic comedy? Because that completely ruined the watching experience, how can you feel thrilled or scared if in the middle of a fight for their lives romantic cliché tunes start blasting?I am in total shock they decided to make a turn like this in the series, one of the worst ways to destroy an awesome franchise REC was known to be. If you are a fan of the first 2 movies, you will be much better off saving your memories of the first films and imagining the series ended there, that way you will only remember the good, thrilling moments REC had to offer.
I love the first 2 movies. But the 3rd one is just awful, even worse than the 4th. Admittedly, I skipped the last 1/3 except the ending. But from what I watched, I don't see a lot of connection to the main story in the first 2 movies. The genesis sounds like it is going to tell the source of all this havoc, probably the girl who was identified of the original carrier in the first 2 movies. But from 2/3 I watched, there was no trace of that. The movie was a plainly zombie same as the millions of the rest of this genre. You don't find the special camera view from a hand-held home DV anymore. The zombies just pop out of nowhere. And there are millions of them following wherever the story goes. It is tiring. I will stop here, since you should get an idea of this movie if you have read so far.
As a fan of the previous 2 films, i can say that i love this third installment. Rec 1 is about how infection started with little possession stuff coming near the end, with an original camera POV. Rec 2, still in camera POV explains further that this infection is truly a possession, given how one of the infected can mimic little girl's voice to lure the victim, and by the end i was stunned by that worm-like thing as the source of it all. And Rec 3 is about the side trip from main story and further explain how the infection turn into possession by evil entities. This time they're adding a romantic story. The first 20 minutes is in camera POV, but quickly turn into regular movie view because Koldo destroy the camera in panic situation (well, who doesn't?). the regular view will continue with Rec 4. By now Rec is no more than a franchise, not movie concept like Rec 1 and 2, something i'm fine with, given i care more about the story than the view.Honestly, i know nothing about the cast. But i love with what they're doing with this movie. Leticia Dolera is the real star of the show. her acting is superb in every scene, so does Diego Martin as Koldo. I love how determined they are in finding each other in the midst of chaos and terror. I can feel the emotion going between them, especially at the ending. When after all they've been through, in the end all is in vain. Clara still got infected, Koldo decide to die with his love rather than leaving her, and both die after got shot by the army. this scene in my opinion is very sad. It shows the undying love they have for each other. And if you pay closer look, you can see that at brief moment before her death, Clara turn to human once more, seeing how she embraces Koldo's hand one last time. Even though her eyes is still like that of the infected, but her expression says otherwise. This scene is so sad i cried a little even after a second and third viewing, i love it!There are no particularly bad scene with this movie, but there's this 1 scene that bothers me. The sewer scene, where Clara split one of the infected's body in two with a chainsaw. It's like cracking cookies. It could be better. That's it, the rest of the gorefest is fine. The laughing zombie uncle is the creepiest one!Last words. If you cling to the first 2 movies for their camera POV, this will be a disappointment to you. but if you look at the story threads, you will love this movie like i do. This is a love-it or hate-it movie, and i choose to love it.
First of all, I like to state that I'm a "sucker" for zombie movies... Always been, always will be...It was with great expectation that I received this one. I loved REC and REC2, and I thought "Wow, nice... REC3... man, this is awesome". After watching it, this were my thoughts: 1. It's not REC material. The story-line takes a curve, here. The only connection to REC, is the dog, that bit the vet.2. There's only a short sequence filmed in "first person view", or shoulder cam. After that, the whole movie is filmed "third person view", the normal way.3. Yes, the movie is a bit of a "let down" compared to it's predecessors, and even to it's successor, but, then again, if you compare this movie to Hollywood-garbage from the last decade, this one is a jewel, a work of art. It should be rated slightly below Dawn of the Dead (the remake - I don't compared anything to the classic zombie flicks from the 70s and the 80s, because those were 10 out of 10 indeed), or even Shaun of the Dead, but still, it is superior to Land of the Dead, Zombieland, Scout's Guide to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse, and even Dead Rising Watchtower and Dead Rising Endgame - keep in mind that I enjoyed every one of those movies. So, try to watch this putting it's title in the "back of your mind", and watch it without making any connections to REC franchise, and you will certainly have a very nice time... This movie, for me, a serious 7.
