This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.
Clever, believable, and super fun to watch. It totally has replay value.
Unshakable, witty and deeply felt, the film will be paying emotional dividends for a long, long time.
Derek Thompson (Dwayne Johnson) is a minor league hockey goon known as 'The Tooth Fairy' for knocking out opponents' tooth. He's dating single mom Carly (Ashley Judd). With his cynicism, he tells kids the brutal 'truth'. After he tells Carly's daughter that there is no real tooth fairy, he receives a Notice of Violation from the Department of Dissemination of Disbelief. Tracy (Stephen Merchant) is his case worker. Head fairy Lily (Julie Andrews) doubles the normal one week sentence. The good news is that The Rock is willing to look silly. That goes a long way but it is not enough. He should be paired up with a nice comedian. Merchant is too mean-spirited which only doubles Thompson's cynicism. It shouldn't be a sarcastic supervisor but rather a super cheery partner who could bring out his optimism. On top that, there is the angry teen and the jerk young gun. There are just a lot of unlikable characters. The jokes don't really work and that's as simple as that. Despite it all, The Rock's natural charisma does come thru.
While it's better then most family related movies(which isn't a very big compliment), I would have to guess that this movie was done by Dwayne Johnson as a contractual obligation. He did The Game Plan and Race to Witch Mountain which are also Disney movies so I'm assuming this was just to fulfill a 3 picture deal he had with Disney. While it's still a serviceable movie it's not the genre of movies that Rocky is best equipped at. He's definitely good in movies where he uses his comedy but he also needs to do some action work like how he's now going to be a part of the G.I. Joe and Fast & Furious franchises. I think Dwayne might be wise to try to get a role if they do an Expendables 3 movie. Seeing him on screen with the likes of Stallone, Willis and Arnold would be a nice passing of the torch kind of thing going on.
A lot of negative reviews on this site, from people this film was not aimed at. This film was aimed at eight-year-olds; and the eight-year-old I saw it with loved it.Anyone much older than eight will know after the first five minutes exactly how it will end - the Rock will be reconciled with his girlfriend, the kid will play his guitar sensationally at the talent contest, the wanna-be fairy will end up a fairy. But the under-tens don't care about this. They will see a series of unsophisticated gags - pratfalls, a man being flushed down a toilet, the wind being put up a cat - tailored at their level. For adults: a cameo from Billy Crystal (I'd pay to watch him cross the road), a bizarre scene in which grown men play poker round a table littered with juice cartons - and most of all the fact that you can leave the cinema with a happy child. And that's worth the price of a ticket.
I got this on DVD as a Christmas present as I love a lot of fantasy movies like Enchanted,Shrek,Aquamarine not to mention the classic Disney movie Beauty & the Beast so I decided to check it out. Tooth Fairy stars ex WWE man The Rock (aka Dwanye Johnson)who plays Derek Thompson a ice hockey player who goes as "The Tooth Fairy". That night he tells his girlfriend's(Ashley Judd)daughter that tooth fairies don't exist but when he gets a cheque saying that he is in bail for 2 weeks he turns into a tooth fairy complete with a tutu(yeah a dude in tutu how hysterical can it get keep reading on). The head of the fairies world is of course played by Julie Andrews who looks fabulous here tells Derek that if he keeps telling kids that tooth fairies don't exist their world will be gone forever. The problem I had with this movie was that there wasn't enough of gags and I felt like watching The Mighty Ducks meets Toothless(you know the one with Kirstie Alley)over and over again. I was disappointed that there wasn't enough of screen time with Billy Crystal(from WHEN HARRY MET SALLY)as he was only in it for like 5 minutes and then its all about Dwanye Johnson shining his gnashers for most of the film. Another was that it was kinda dull in some places.I suggest the movies that I mentioned below are a lot better. But still Tooth Fairy wasn't a bad flick but it wouldn't be my all time favorite as it was kinda lame. This film is definitely suitable for 4 year olds not for a 19 year old girl like me.5/10
