An Exercise In Nonsense
It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
This is an excellent film. Two great performances back with a great story. A must see!
"Rust and Bone" sure had its rusty moments, make no bones about it. Marion Cotillard stars as Stephanie, a killer whale trainer, who tragically loses her legs during one of the shows of the whale theme park she performs at. Matthias Schoenaerts co-stars as Alain, a financially-struggling single father to a young boy who leaves Belgium to Antibes to live with his sister. Alain meets Stephanie before her accident at a bar where he is the bouncer at. After Stephanie's tragedy, the two grow closer together even though Alain still wants to get his bone on with the ladies. Writer-Director Jacques Audiard's orchestration of the film did not have me having a whale of a time, it seemed stagnant at times and very uneven. His rusty screenplay also needed a bit of an entertainment polish. Nevertheless, Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenarts' riveting starring performances is what kept "Rust and Bone" from drowning. If you love "Rust and Bone" I have a bone to pick with you; but I say go see it anyways if it's your last rustort, I mean resort. *** Average
"Rust and Bone" is a drama movie which has to do with a woman who is a killer whale trainer and she had a terrible accident. After that she gets involved with a man who is fighting for money.Marion Cotillard (Stéphanie) who played as the whale trainer makes one of her best interpretations of all the movies that she played and I liked her very much. I also liked the interpretation of Matthias Schoenaerts (Alain van Versch) who played as fighter. In this movie we can observe how the relationships of people change when something very important happened to one of them. I liked this movie very much because it shows us and makes us feel how is to be and to live after that accident and with this we can think some things from our lives a little bit different.
I just cannot get this film out of my head. It touched me so deeply and I'm still trying to figure out why. It seems to me that it's a film which is almost impossible to define. I feel unable to do it any justice because it is so much more than the sum of its parts( but don't misunderstand me, its parts are v good) It is so subtle and complex that individual viewers will take very different things from it. Whatever else it may be though, it was in my view, one of the most convincing and touching love stories I've ever seen on screen. Top notch performances. Not an easy watch by any means, but so rewarding. What I admire most is the absolute refusal to resort to sentimentality. We feel what we feel, without manipulation. The minute it finished I wanted to watch it all over again and having done so I feel I am only just getting to grips with the many levels the film works on and its message/s. Even after several viewings certain aspects of it still puzzle me, but in a good way. Highly intelligent film making.
