It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny

The Skeleton Key (2005) is a very layered thriller/horror movie that will switch things up on you just when you think you have everything all figured out. I adore scary films like that. This definitely is not a run of the mill cheesy horror movie that you will become bored with, it's not predictable at all. It's just so refreshing to see a movie like this. Kate Hudson is good in her lead role, she tackles the dramatic sense of it well, she plays both a kind, compassionate and tough woman who becomes concerned that the old man she is caring for is being hurt by someone (something supernatural or maybe his wife (Gena Rowlands). That is another fine performance in this movie. Gena Rowlands. I absolutely loved her in this film! What strong, mysterious and interesting character she plays. Peter Sarsgaad is good too. The script is pretty well written, it has plenty of eerie creepiness and also a sense of good moral direction from Kate Hudson's character. I will not give away the ending, you'll just have to go and see it for yourself. But just suffice to say that the ending is more than satisfying. It's one of the best things about the film, it's just all out together so well. I 100% suggest watching The Skeleton Key if your a movie lover who enjoys watching good scary thrillers with a supernatural lean to it. 8/10.

It's not just the skeleton key that opens all the doors, it is also one soul, that is able to posses all other skeletons.The Skeleton Key created a twist, by throwing the viewer off with the obvious... And I feel, it was executed sublimely.Violet was the obvious culprit. Luke, you were very suspicious of, and once your suspicions are brought to light, you feel that perhaps, you have the film figured out, until...You find out why the mirrors aren't up. Until you find out Luke's role. Until you find out, why Ben needed to leave.I'm not a big Horror fan, but, this movie feels very original. The twists are - if you didn't see them coming, eyebrows raising. The ending is... Perhaps one of the best I've seen in the genre.ONLY with the most insanely "Justifiable" script, ONLY with that... This movie could have an awesome sequel.I started off with a 6/10, in the beginning while the mystery was being set up. It wasn't moving at a pace of my liking. However, when the story shift gears, so did my rating; from 6, to 7/10.There after, the twists and the ending... Pushed me to an 8/10.For this particular genre, I feel The Skeleton Key had some meat on it's bones. It's not necessarily scary, but, it is... Neat.

This chiller in centred on hospice assistant Caroline Ellis; she has become somewhat disenchanted with the place she works to replies to an advert for a live-in carer at an old plantation house deep in the bayous. When she gets there she meets Violet Devereaux and her husband Benjamin; he has suffered a stroke and can't care for himself… it will be Caroline's job to look after him for his remaining days. Shortly after arriving she is given a skeleton key that opens every door in the house. She finds a door in the attic that it won't open; Mrs Devereaux explains that the room hasn't been entered since she and her husband moved in several decades ago. Caroline manages to get into the room and discovers various spells, potions and other hoodoo paraphernalia. It turns out the room originally belonged to Mama Cecile and Papa Justify; two servants who had been lynched ninety years before. She investigates further and starts to believe that Mrs Devereaux is responsible for what happened to her husband and that she too is in real danger.If you want gore, a high body count and plenty of jump-scares this won't be the film for you; however if you want a decent atmospheric chiller that is creepy rather than scary then this film may be worth checking out. The setting adds to the films atmosphere; the sort of Deep South location where one can easily believe unpleasant things happened in the bad old days. Kate Hudson does a solid enough job as Caroline and Gena Rowlands manages to be suitably creepy while being a charming southern lady as Violet. John Hurt is impressive as Benjamin; a character who barely says a word but conveys a lot of emotion with every look. The story progresses at a decent pace and there are a few twists the ending isn't a total surprise though… certainly anybody who has seen 'The Wicker Man' is likely to figure out that being the protagonist doesn't guarantee Caroline's ultimate safety. Overall though I thought this was an effective and atmospheric chiller.

First of all, it's not a horror movie. I don't get why it's classified in this genre. It's a thriller but then again it's a good thriller. One that you will watch a second time in a couple years and that you don't regret having watched it. The whole movie is about suspense and wondering what's coming next. Kate Hudson (as Caroline Ellis, the nurse) plays her role very well. Gena Rowlands (as the strange Violet Devereaux) is the other actress that carries the movie. And even though John Hurt (as Ben Devereaux) has not much lines to speak he plays his role brilliantly as well. It's one of those dark thrillers that get you from the beginning till the end. Without spoiling the story, it's certainly worth a watch. You won't regret it.
