Good concept, poorly executed.
Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.
One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
A movie about government-sanctioned experiments with psychotropic drugs, and the effects they had on the victims, could be interesting. If the actual events were fictionalized into something with supernatural elements, that also could work, as could a movie that exploited a presumed otherworldly origin for short-wave "numbers stations." As other reviewers have noted, however, Banshee's film-makers seem to have taken a jumble of such plot elements that might have worked on their own, and thrown them together in a way that just comes across as messy. Although the acting is competent, the characters lack any sense of motivation, and they do not appear to be changed in any way by the bizarre events that involve them. By the end of the movie everything is as it was at the start, so we might as well not have bothered with any of it.Not the worst movie I've seen, by any means, but not particularly engaging. After the first thirty minutes I wanted it to stop.
I definitely wasn't prepared for how terrifying I found this film, from start to finish. I found the switch from the journalists personal footage type to the CIA 'found footage' incredibly effective at sending my heart rate through the roof in a Pavlovian conditioning type response ha ha, and the film holds out that little bit extra to build suspense like no film I've watched in a while! I think horror fans have to watch a lot of substandard films to find the gems that really deliver those jump out your chair screaming moments and for me this was one of them!! Left me feeling so on edge I made my boyfriend come into the bathroom with me and then screamed when I saw his reflection in the mirror. Do not watch alone! Yes, the storyline is a little too multi-directional at times but this doesn't detract from the scares all. If you're looking for something to get your adrenal glands going, this is the one!
There is nothing worth telling about this movie except that it is one of the most disgusting movie I have ever watched. I waited and waited for the movie to pick up some pace and deliver something worth watching but there was nothing except disappointment. To be very frank I didn't like the trailer at all, I decided to watch the movie only after reading a few positive user reviews on IMDb. To my utter disgust it turned out to a complete waste of time. In fact majority of the movie is bald and boring, largely due to some poor acting & amateurish direction. In addition there was nothing scary in this so called 'horror flick' which was the least I expected. Bottom line guys stay away from this movie, save your 87 precious minutes or watch something else. I would like give it a big 0/10 but since there is no such option i vwill rate it 1/10.
Basically a missing person mystery with heavy reliance on sound/shadow jump-scares.Intriguing opening sequence, followed by a dull start to the investigation, where the pace flags. This is recurrent, and the story has to jump start with ... you know. Too many moving parts, I reckon, and it feels a bit contrived, always having to explain itself.Jump scares? At least ten. The first few are very effective, making me blush in my girly reaction. But near the climax you can tell the actress has been directed to angle the torchlight away from a dark space because there's going to be a ... Jump!Scare! Is it down to the scene itself, or audience fatigue? Hmmm. The actor playing the Hunter Thompson type stoner novelist is very good. Not impressed with the lead - standard strong woman issue, but she left me cold anyway.A lot of reviewers have praised the sound structure - thought it was good, nothing special.A Venn diagram of the story would overlap Cthulhu/alien/libertarian paranoia. Strangely it delivers a clunky anti-drugs message in the penultimate location - should have applied that to ... you know.ps. the novelist's voice is unmistakable - but I had to confirm on the Silence of the Lambs page.
