This movie is the proof that the world is becoming a sick and dumb place

One of my all time favorites.

For all the hype it got I was expecting a lot more!

The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

SOMEWHERE is melodramatic to the point of schmaltz. While decently mounted, it's often clumsy in its execution. The time travel premise is so lite-weight, that it practically disappears into thin air (despite it coming from the esteemed Richard Matheson). And, yet, I have to admit it got to me emotionally. The central idea is as if the nocturnal dream scene in LAURA truly came to life (although Matheson said it was based on a portrait he saw of stage actress Maude Adams (not the modern Bond actress) through self-hypnosis. It certainly takes the film out of the realm of true Sci-Fi and makes it more an outright fantasy - who among us has never fantasized about meeting an actor or actress of the past? You either buy the gimmick, or you don't. What hampers the film is that Director Jeannot Szwarc' Direction is clumsy. Simple details are both underlined and highlighted as if to reach the densest viewer. The transitions and mood lurches awkwardly. Here, Matheson the screenwriter, must take his share of the blame. But, the biggest obstacle is Christopher Reeve's performance. Reeve was truly effective with the broad strokes of his Superman/Clark Kent dual roles. But, here, his relative inexperience shows time and again as he is unable to calibrate his expressions and body movements. Jane Seymour is charming and lovely, but hasn't as much to bear. Christopher Plummer is solid as Seymour's Svengali-like manager. And...yet....SOMEWHERE IN TIME effects your emotions. It's a tragic love story that transcends it's unsubtle moments. Composer John Barry's use of Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini inveigles its way into your unconsciousness (Matheson's novel used Mahler's Ninth). Similarly, Barry's own main theme is sweepingly passionate (Barry liked it so much, he reworked it into his Oscar-winning score for OUT OF AFRICA; google the two themes - they're practically the same!). Matheson uses some of the tried and true cliches of the Time-Travel genre to nice effect at times (particularly, with the Hotel valet: "Haven't I seen you before?"). SOMEWHERE was a notable flop, and it must have doubly stung when just five year later BACK TO THE FUTURE became a blockbuster hit (of course, it tread on much more audience friendly pop culture territory). Some will call me an old softy for buying even half-way into SOMEWHERE IN TIME. I can be as cynical a movie-goer as anybody, but, once in a while its nice to think there are sentimentalists like Matheson, Szwarc, Reeve, Seymour et al. out there who can touch some very human chords.

I will rate this movie 10. I don't watch romantic movie much, I started watching this one hoping to watch some time-travelling but as it turned out, it's more of a complex romantic film than a Sci-Fi one. It's the best romantic film I have ever seen! Definitely a must watch if you like combination of Sci-Fi and romance.

Somewhere In Time - It is universally panned by the critics, but loved by the audience. I wonder if I, also, would pan the film, as a paid critic, because there are flaws, and I might not want to wear my heart on my sleeve, and possibly diminish myself in the eyes of my readers. I think there were some harsh critics, who secretly loved the movie, or grew to love it, over the years. This movie played out like 'The Matrix.' People didn't get it. When both went out in VHS format, a cult following ensued. To be fair, 'Somewhere In Time' opened during a writers strike, and saw one week in the theaters, with no opportunity to promote it, prior to opening. My dad, a big sci-fi and Richard Matheson fan, was disappointed. I loved it, and completely enveloped myself in this romantic fantasy. Everything was going great, and then the bottom dropped out, and you fell with Richard in such a tremendous loss, that he had worked so hard to get. It's no wonder he sat on that chair, like a stone...his eyes red from tears, and his complexion, ghost white. The ending is the reverse of 'The Ghost and Mrs Muir.' Ultimately, a happy ending, with a mixture of wistful sadness.

What an amazing perfect movie! Every decade there are a handful if films that make movie watching a true experience that lasts the rest of our lives! This is one of those precious masterpieces! A perfect 10! Not only for romantics, but for the entire human race! I watch it everyyear now and every time it heals your heart and soul!
