Powerful
Excellent but underrated film
A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.
The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
As with many sequels to classic films, 'Jaws 2' is a big disappointment. Everything that made the first film so special is missing from the sequel. It's flat, slow, lacking in ideas and originality, and the tension just isn't on the same level as the first film. The storyline was never going to be as good, but I still expected something a lot better. It feels very safe and uninspired, in contrast to the original which took so many risks. You can't help but judge this film against its predecessor, which is probably why it has so many negative votes. Judging it on its own merits, it's certainly not a bad film and is still quite enjoyable. Obviously when a film is a huge success, as 'Jaws' was, a sequel is inevitable, but given how unique and memorable the original was, subsequent films weren't really necessary. 'Jaws 2', while not bad in its own right, isn't good enough to justify a sequel.
The original 'Jaws' must have been a huge act to follow up on for director Jeannot Szwarc, since the original became one of the greatest movie success stories of all time. Although this film is not as good, it was nice to see the original couple in the form of Roy Scheider and Lorraine Gary back for a second outing. If not compared to the original, it is still a good, enjoyable film in its own right.
The pressure of making Jaws 2 was immense. Historically sequels are poorly received. However, Jaws 2 is an exception. The film couldn't be as good as the original Jaws, that was a given to everyone (ie. This included Paramount, the producers, writers, actors and fans) But somehow, everyone involved in creating Jaws 2 released a worthy succsser to the original Jaws. The storyline wasn't the best, but it was good enough. The script lacked character development and the floating wreckage with the teens was too drawn out. And the mechanical shark breaching the surface of the water was overdone. The original Jaws was highly successful, yet the shark was rarely seen breaching the waters surface. Jaws 2 had a group of talented young actors and the seasoned stars of the movie were great. Although the plot was weak as was character development, the movie was successful. Jaws 2 wouldn't have worked without the amazing musical score of John Williams. He made Jaws 2 scary and of course elevated the original Jaws to greatness. Jaws 2 is a very good film that proved that sequels can be successful.
The most shocking thing about the jaws sequel is that Chief Brody seems to know even less about boating than he did at the beginning of the first movie. You'd think he'd have learned anything about boating during the first film. Doesn't know how to dock a boat, leave a slip, use a radio, navigate at all, use a compass. But by comparison to the sniveling kids who just sob and scream Brody is a hero. You'd think they'd have had people on hand to educate the cast on these fairly simple concepts. The real villains in this film are the kids and Brody. Brody and the kids are so inept that you can't help but feel bad for the shark. The kids nor Brody should survive due to sheer incompetence, but they do, and they defeat the shark in the process; giving a bad rep to sharks everywhere. Poor Jaws.. No wonder the sharks want so much vengeance in Jaws 3 and 4.
