Best movie of this year hands down!
Truly the worst movie I've ever seen in a theater
Expected more
Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
What worked: A true tale is always better than fiction. How much was omitted, dramatized, and cut out/merged due to time constraints always changes the story was in the back of my mind as I watched. However, I find the story is about characters Assange and his cohorts interesting. As the Fifth Estate unfolds we find out what makes Assange tick. The story of Wikileaks itself unfolds is even more interesting. What Wikileaks actual did the how, why, what is exposed is just fascinating. Both sub stories unfold at a pace where the view is wanting to know more. Mixed in is the sub cutler of the hackers, cyber underground give a realist feel. All three components makes for the an interesting story. The thesis of the right to know vs personal privacy/ lives at risk is a great debate for a memorable ending. Was Assange and Wiki's strict policy with time lines and with out redaction too much? The Fifth Estate shows the effects of news on people both good and bad which is a nice change from the plethora of good vs evil super hero movies.
WOW! Berg guy is totally self righteous a hole. You don't even have to know anything about the subject matter and you know this movie is totally BOGUS! A complete smear campaign on the founder of Wikileaks. "People love the true WikiLeaks story: a small group of dedicated journalists and tech activists who take on corruption and state criminality against the odds," Assange writes in his statement. "But this film isn't about that. ... Instead of the exciting true story, we get a film about a bland German IT worker who wasn't even there and a fabricated fight over redactions with the old newspapers and the State Department saving the day. The result is a geriatric snoozefest that only the US government could love." "As justification it will claim to be fiction, but it is not fiction. It is distorted truth about living people doing battle with titanic opponents. It is a work of political opportunism, influence, revenge and, above all, cowardice."
Good movie, but:"So, what?" Very good cinematography, great editing, great constellation of actors. Sorry guys, you will not get Oskar, that's for sure. The plot is finally not absolutely brainlessly hollywoody, what really leaves good aftertest. You fight for your idea, you run, may be you hide, and what you have at the end? Who can do - they do, who can not do - they teach, who can not do and can not even teach - they are in power. Well, probably, there is a reason. To talk about secret knowledge - how many of Americans know names of American officials like Victoria Nuland or Geoffrey Pyatt, or Jenn Psaki? They are not CIA or NSA, and you never heard of them? Search them on youtube. And you saying leaks... It's all on the surface, just see what you see, not what other told you to see.
Triggering our age of high- end secrecy, massive news leaks and revelations of classified information, Wikileaks created a massive change in the world. Now with the release of the thriller based on real events, "THE FIFTH ESTATE" reveals the positive and negative sides of the entire game that got the state of Internet upside down. Right from the leaks of the illegal activities conducted by the Swiss Bank, Julius Baer to the biggest leak of the US department cables, this movie kept me engaged throughout till the end. This was one movie that garnered mixed reactions, both positive and negative; including one from the Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange himself."Our view is that a $US40 million advertising budget promoting WikiLeaks around the world, and actors like Cumberbatch speaking about it, is a good thing for the popularization of WikiLeaks"—WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, on the filmPersonally I liked the movie as it provided me more of an in-depth knowledge about WikiLeaks which I had no idea about. Besides the informative part, actors like Cumberbatch (essaying Julian Assange) did an outstanding job and amazed me with his skills.
