Memorable, crazy movie
Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
The highly talented, but mostly unknown, cast delivers an entertaining feel good drama revolving around the exotic idea of a time machine. The story follows an intern magazine reporter (Aubrey Plaza) trying to write a story about a social outcast (Mark Duplass) who declares himself a time traveler. Plaza and Duplass play off of each other beautifully and take their characters through very relatable character development to keep the viewer interested and guessing at the validity of the potential time traveler's claim. These two are accompanied by a solid supporting cast that help the story move along with often hilarious side stories. While keeping an overall lightheartedness (reminiscent of Back to the Future) throughout the plot, writer Derek Connolly manages to keep everything realistic and credible. Here, Connolly explores the time traveling theme by making the viewer think of the possibility of it and what it represents and finally bringing out the hope for time travel in everyone. This smart, funny and entertaining story doesn't fail to immerse the viewer in its universe and make them fall in love with the characters. A solid work that will keep the viewer guessing, worth the watch.
As bad an actress as Plaza is and as cheerfully try-hard this flick turned out to be, I'd still happily watch Duplass doing his taxes. On that basis, I found this movie underwhelming but still providing enough points for my attention to cling onto -- hence the most favorable rating. That aside... I mean... it's only just another formulaic, quirky rom-com. Cute at times, cringe-worthy at others, characters a little flat, narrative contextually askew in order to fit the love-story. Nothing that hasn't been done before or won't be done again -- a 'take it or leave it' effort.
The source material for this film is a well-known newspaper advertisement. They could have just run with that, making it about a guy who wants to time travel and his life and regrets but they did not stop there. The story is science fiction, fantasy and real-relationship. This little film is crafted with wonderful story line, dialog, plot. It brilliantly handles very complex themes involving the past and regret. However, the film is not just about going back and changing something in your past. It is mostly about the power of love to heal emotional wounds. There is a message about past loves, new loves, and employment.
The man, who is recruiting someone to go back in time with him, meets a girl. She is a reporter observing his mysterious plan, asks him to come together. They are getting closer gradually, and in the end, they successfully go back in time. The story itself is interesting and exciting but there is a little disappointment with regard to the ending. As I mentioned above, it came to the conclusion with their successfully achieved time-traveling. Given that it is basically human drama, it is spectacular that the story suddenly switches the contents to the scientific fiction. It is well enough to attract the attentions of audience. However, it leaves a lot of questions unanswered: how does he invents the time-machine, when are they exactly heading for and what about the story of sub-characters. Considering it keeps these matters vague, you can say the story is poorly finished. To sum up, you can enjoy yourself with the movie except the very last part of the story, which slightly let me down.
