Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.
First: I really enjoyed this movie. I love sci-fy and when it gets to be combined with a story of fully dynamic characters that show the heart of being what we would call human is deeper than being a homo sapien. An engaging plot riddled with surprising moments that showed me where I have room to grow in expanding my own understanding of how our differences are much less important that our similarities.Second: This is one of those movies that can best be appreciated by someone who enjoys the trailer. The movie is as advertised and from the heart. If you want to hold it to the public lens of what most people think is good then continue to read reviews written by people paid to write them for that general public. If you are less interested in an Oscar nomination and more interested in a store that speaks in your heart, then you probably shouldn't care about the TomatoMeter so much. Enjoy it if you thought you would before you looked up it's rating, you still will.
No spoilers!I really do not understand the hate that this movie has gotten. It seems to come from people who were either expecting an action packed, guns blazing, science fiction film or people that were expecting a carbon copy of the book.I had no idea what this movie was about when I sat down to watch it, besides that it was listed in the "post apocalyptic" genre, which is a favorite of mine. I also hadn't ever read or heard of the book, so I had no real expectations when I pressed play. I'm not particularly a fan of romance movies, but that's what this is at it's core. But it is accented by many things. There is the science fiction element, the struggle between right and wrong, good and evil, love and hate, compassion and envy. The ending was great - it could have ended at two different points before it actually does - the first of which you say to yourself "don't let it end like this," then you're amazed at what happens next, it's what you wanted to happen in your head, and the story continues on with the actual ending showing us that humans have a chance at survival.... and maybe even coexistence with their alien hosts.... It's really hard to put into words what this film did for me, it was like finding a diamond in a pile of rubble. Give it a watch, and I hope you end up enjoying the story as much as I did :)
The plot was dull, ancient recycled cheese, the sfx, camera-work and locations weren't noticeably good, there was no excitement, but somehow I found myself sitting through this movie, mesmerized, drawn into it despite myself. And then I checked who played the part of Wanda, and realized why. Saoirse Ronan. I loved her performance in The Lovely Bones, and she's every bit as captivating in this. Must watch out for more movies starring her.As for the rest of it - imagine a soppy remake of Invasion of the Bodysnatchers with fluffy caterpillars...
You remember the TV show V with aliens invading our earth, taking our bodies and resources while crushing a brave resistance? Well, this is pretty much the same idea here, with the funny idea of Inside out about having much people driving one body ! The other difference is that the movie is rather philosophical and analyses feeling instead of being a hollow action movie with guns fights, car fights, etc The good thing here is that the cast is excellent : Saoirse has everything for her as she excels in physical stuff and has drama knowledge as well For one time, Kruger finds the perfect part as the seekers chief because she has indeed a cold, unfunny, strict and not cool personality. However this canyon location and cave settlement is not really enjoyable, all the more than the movie used too much the dreadful orange / blue palette So it's an original SciFi piece but at the end, just honest and not worthy to be labeled as a Classic !
