The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.

One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

Roscuro the rat visits the kingdom of Dor during the "Royal Soup Day." Roscuro goes for a closer smell and falls into the Queen's soup. He scared her to death, and the distraught king bans all soup and rats. Roscuro falls down into the kingdom of rats. Princess Pea despairs over the kingdom's decline. Then Despereaux is born. He's a small mice with giant ears who has no natural fears. They try to teach him to cower to no avail. He befriends Princess Pea with the love of books, and the council banishes him to the dungeons for breaking a code about talking to humans. Then he is pit against a cat in the Ratworld arena games. The animation looks good but the story is way too messy. There are too many story lines going on. The voice work is generally unimpressive especially Despereaux. He lacks energy. Emma Watson is a little better. Coming a year and a half after Ratatouille, the difference in energy and fun between the two is night and day. The movie is better off staying with Despereaux all the way through and introduce Roscuro later. This is a movie that needs a few more rewrites to clean up the messiness. Too bad because there is a good message somewhere in the movie.

Daughter read the book 2x's. We read together. It appears the book is very dramatic and does not come across with the film. It appears a hard one to get it right with the movie because lots of details with the book. It's an ultimate, I can do it no matter what, book with love at it's theme. May take a few attempts with movie but I can see this really being a movie, smash hit, someday. the book really centers on being a Queen and focusing on her and the penalties of not being in line with the kings commandments. No soup/utinceles for the country due to reaction of rat falling in the soup. It contains so many moral decisions and hard to focus on one for movie. it really made our daughter think and the underlieing theme is being kind and romantic. It appears to be a romance book of fighting for love for the queen and those less fortunate. However, lots of other, many, moral tones in the book. Lots to think about.

nice, charming, sweet. a fairy - tale from old and precise recipes. a delight. and seed of special joy. because the princess, the sad kingdom, the silky moral lesson are at perfect place. but, more important, the hero is magnificent. and very special. a family film. or just a form of magic in the era of blockbusters. a beautiful work in which each detail is important. because it is a story about old fashion virtues - courage, truth, honor, honesty. and respect for duty. and a new mouse in middle of action is not bad thing. maybe for be conscience for a sad rat. and Charming Prince for a young girl. and model for public. because message is simple - the identity is more important than voice of majority. always.

It's sad that movie producers don't make this kind of movie anymore. This is a classic, wonderful fairy tale that is good for the whole family. It does have a few flaws such as this movie is too dark for a G-rating. But the movie itself works and it's not boring like many people say it to be.This is about a mouse who is different from the rest of the mice. After being kicked out of this tribe, he befriends a rat and together they must save a kingdom from darkness. This movie has an impressive voice cast. Matthew Broderick does a good job playing the hero mouse. The animation is pretty good. It looked like the animation was drawn. I liked it though. It reminds me of old Disney movies. In fact, this has a great moral like the rest. I liked this film a lot. I rate this film 8/10.
