Too much of everything
That was an excellent one.
How sad is this?
When Jason Statham is good he is very good. In this movie I think he is very good as the silent, deadly killer for hire. It is a straightforward killer/action/thriller. The story is nothing new but it is a well working story which is nicely executed. The story is, as I wrote above, not very original. Killer for hire finds out that his next target is his mentor and friend. As the professional he is he executes the job anyway but later discoverers that not all is as is should be. Time for revenge. A simple, straightforward and well working story.Things are complicated a bit by Bishop taking his friend's son under his wings. Of course he wants to walk in his fathers footsteps. He is inexperienced but also undisciplined. Something that, not surprisingly, is causing problems.I do like that Bishop stays a no bullshit hardass killer throughout the entire movie. No whining or silly emotional outbreaks or breakdowns. I also like the unemotional, silent and deadly impression of a professional assassin the he radiates. There are quite a few fairly well done action scenes in the movie ranging from silent assassinations to the obligatory blow things up scenes. The parts where Bishop and Steves goes after the big bad guy is quite well done with some quite cool stunts without being over the top.The ending was probably the only thing in the movie that was a bit unexpected. Unexpected in a good way that is. I quite liked the little surprise there.Overall I as well as my son liked this movie quite a lot. I hope that Mechanic: Resurrection is as good as this one.
This remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson film of the same name appears at first like a typical Jason Statham film...lots of action and violence. It's only after it gets a bit into the film that the differences emerge, when the hit man agrees to train his mentors aimless and vengeance-bent son. The speed with which the youngster accepts a killing routine is a little surprising, making one wonder if he's more aware of what happened to his father than he lets on. Because of this, one fully expects a confrontation and showdown between the two and dreads the outcome. There's little of the usual Statham tongue-in-cheek, for he portrays this character as ice-cold and utterly alone, except for one wistful moment when he's tempted by a waterfront friend to buy a boat he has for sale and simply fail away. Because of that, one wonders why he tolerates his "trainee's" divergence from the way their kills are set up, each one bringing the deaths, previously going unnoticed or classed as accident, into the public eye with devastating attention. Here's where the twists come in, making this a bit different and an enjoyable film. This film was viewed as a DVD rental and no remuneration was involved in the writing of this review.
Follows an elite hit man as he teaches his trade to an apprentice who has a connection to one of his previous victims. Although The Mechanic packs some great punches for example the action is good and the tension is pretty cool and both Jason Statham and Ben Foster are really good unfortunately the talented Donald Sutherland is easily wasted very early in the movie, Tony Goldwyn as the villain is easily forgettable and the whole thing with the gay assassin was pretty funny and came out of nowhere it's not a bad action film or even a bad Jason Statham movie but it needed more action and better villains besides that it's a nice action film but nothing more than that.
I will keep this review like the movie: short, fast paced, and grabs your attention. The movie is sure to keep you entertained, yet there is nothing memorable about it. The plot is very stereotypical of a "secret agent" action film, where there is a double-crosser in an organization and our hero/hit-man tracks them down to hand out his justice. Some of the action is over the top which could have been replaced with some character development or a more intricate, thought through plot . They concluded the film with a quick ending and no explanation for the actions that occurred. In conclusion it was an entertaining action packed 93 minutes, but lacked substance.
