best movie i've ever seen.
Very interesting film. Was caught on the premise when seeing the trailer but unsure as to what the outcome would be for the showing. As it turns out, it was a very good film.
This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.
Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
Three years later, mainstream vampire flicks remain dormant and so Wiseman and his team produce the inevitable sequel. Critics lambasted it, audiences enjoyed it...I'm with the latter. He's upped the budget, increased the action but, yet again, told a thinly written story. The vampire and lycan war rages on, Selene and new hybrid Michael must stop vampire elder Markus from releasing his imprisoned brother William in order to take over the dark bleak world with vampire-lycan hybrids. Basic story is basic, yet somehow feels more convoluted as each chapter is released. In fact, it's so complicated in terms of depicting the Corvinus bloodline that the first few minutes were just exposition. Flashbacks of the previous film to make sure the audience are up to speed. That in itself raises alarm bells. However, despite the bland monotonous story, Wiseman has crafted a consistently entertaining sequel that removes the horror elements and instead injects the narrative with pure action adrenaline. This change-up surprisingly works and will set the franchise off to a new course. Markus seems like the vampire equivalent of 'The Terminator', seemingly unstoppable with his sharp back wing arm things (best description ever). Kate Beckinsale in all her black leather glory is here to save the day, where the two have a fantastically exciting showdown in the third act. Actually, the entire third act is ace. Redeems the entire film from being a melodramatic drag. Derek Jacobi brings in some much needed acting talent with his thespian background, and intriguingly introduces some emotion to the story. Wiseman's insistence on utilising practical effects is always a pleasure to see, although some of the occasional CGI misses entirely. Some excellent production design, particularly the medieval castle in the final battle which ever so reminded me of 'Skyrim'. This sequel really is an onslaught of wet fur, sharp fangs and UV bullets, but it never once failed to entertain me. I can only hope the franchise maintains this consistent level...
The first movie of Underworld is very scary. But this is scarier. This movie has great acting. It also has great special effects. It also has a great story line. 6.8 is a good ratting. But this such a great horror film that 6.8 is underrating it. This is a 10. See this movie. It is scarier then The Shining and that is not easy to do. This scarier then Halloween and that is not easy to do. This is scarier then Friday the 13th and that is not easy to do. This is scarier then A Nightmare on elm street and that is not easy to do. This is scarier then Psycho and that is not easy to do. One movie that is scarier then this is Underworld awakenings. This is one of the scariest movies from 2006. See it.
Kate Beckinsale is back for more vampire/werewolf shenanigans. Underworld: Evolution picks up right where the first film left off. If you haven't seen that first film do so. This sequel tries to give you a Cliff Notes recap of what happened in the first film. But honestly if you haven't seen the first one you may be a little lost here. And you'd want to see that first film anyway because quite frankly that one was better than this one.So where were we? Beckinsale's Selene, still of course shoehorned into that body-hugging catsuit, is a vampire whose job is to kill werewolves. But now she's on the run with Michael, who's a vampire-werewolf hybrid. And Selene is kind of falling in love with Michael. Does this make any sense? Again, hope you watched that first movie. Meanwhile, vampire elder Marcus has gotten some wolf blood and is now a really ticked-off hybrid, flying around like a very angry bat. Marcus is coming after Selene and Michael. He's after something. That something turns out to be a pendant. This is apparently the most important pendant in the history of the world. Why? Well, we'll get to that later. First we've got a bunch of action sequences to get through. Bat-man Marcus and wolf-man Michael square off in all their CGI glory. There's more wolves, more vampires, more blood, more death and destruction. This movie had a much bigger budget than the first one and it's easy to see where the money went. It's a visual effects bonanza. Everything is bigger this time around. But bigger is not necessarily better.Let's be honest, this whole story is rather silly. Vampires and werewolves slaughtering one another. But in that first movie the story, silly though it may have been, was engaging, compelling and even somewhat charming. The backstory was very well worked-out, it was a silly movie but it had some smarts to it. This time out charm and smarts are in much shorter supply. This is just a big action movie like so many other big action movies you have seen. This one just happens to involve vampires and werewolves. Beckinsale gives it a game effort again, building this franchise around her paid off very well. She kicks butt. This time she gets to show real emotion as well. And she certainly looks the part, who else would you rather see in that skin-tight catsuit? Scott Speedman is back as Michael. He has less actual acting to do than he did in the first movie. Now he just has to be big and strong and smash stuff. Which he does well enough I suppose. Tony Curran has his moments playing Marcus but all in all that character is bit of a problem. He's way over-the-top. Menacing to be sure but often cartoonishly so. This movie has a lot of action, and that action looks really good. The movie is shot beautifully, if a little darkly, and the visual effects are utterly convincing. But the action to story ratio is skewed way too far in the direction of action. It's a reasonably enjoyable watch for anyone who enjoyed the first movie. But there's little doubt you'll have enjoyed the first movie more.
If must say that the Underworld movies are enjoyable if you love vampires, werewolves, sci-fi and a LOT of fighting. I love how they re-invented the vampire and the werewolf, I like how the vampires look and the werewolves are alright too. The whole world looks dark and grey, with rain and snow everywhere which obviously helps the atmosphere become more haunted and vampiresque. It's just that there is one thing missing: emotions and character development. The whole movie centers around a big problem that vampire Selene and her hybrid boyfriend have to solve. They move from the one place to the other, looking for clues to find out the truth. Obviously people are following them and trying to stop them and they have to kick some ass and continue their journey. It is enjoyable and the story is really really good, it's just that you don't really feel anything because the characters are just all very dull. Selene is the child trauma serious girl, which is boring and dull after a while. She only cares about her boyfriend, but other than that she is no fun, no good lines and not even some sarcasm. She barely shows affection for Michael (except for the parts they are all over each other) but not really any conversations that might point out that they are in a relationship. Almost all characters are designed like that, they all look like robots to me and that is why I just can't say that Underworld is a favorite. I watched a lot of vamp movies and I must say that I wouldn't recommend Underworld as a personal fav, I would just say that the story is nice and there is a lot of ass kicking violence in it. I will continue with the rest of the movies, hopefully they suddenly change their ways!
