The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
This movie is entirely built around beautiful set pieces, included no matter how many irrational plot devices that is necessary to facilitate them.Oblivion is evidence that the big movie companies assumes that most viewers are stupid. The long line of 10/10 reviews here is evidence that they are right.Few things in this movie makes any sense whatsoever, from the stupid energy scheme to the pointless technological gadgets all the way to the transparent pool. This movie is dumb, painfully stupid, mindlessly pretty. Perhaps it's little surprise that the average movie goer would love it.If you are equipped with a three digit IQ on the other hand... don't waste your time.
In the year 2077 Jack (Tom Cruise) and Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) are a working couple who live in a tower on the planet earth. We are given the background: Aliens called Scavengers or "Scavs" destroyed the moon. The earth went into turmoil. We managed to defeat them through the use of nuclear weapons. With our planet uninhabitable, our people went to live on Titan. An orbiting triangle space station gives orders to Jack whose mission is to maintain an army of drones used to hunt the remnants of the scavengers.Jack's memory was erased in case aliens capture him. He has dreams of a woman (Olga Kurylenko)in NYC from a time long before the invasion. About the time Morgan Freeman shows up, things tie together, we get the twist, and the film takes off in a different direction. The characters in the film are dry. The dialouge was boring. The action moved slow with the film definitely being too long. I enjoyed the one early scene where Cruise attempts a "Mission Impossible" type of escape, one that fails. The cinematography was great with a decent story line. If you love science fiction and are tired of those SyFy films, this is a welcomed change with neat killer drones and landscapes.I am sure Cruise didn't have to beat himself up too much to accept the role of Luke Skywalker, Captain Steven Hiller (Will Smith, Independence), and Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis, Armageddon) all wrapped into one as he saves the world from alien invaders. This film is an obvious Scientology film just like "Battlefield Earth". Tom Cruise believes, according to "Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood & the Prison of Belief" that he will actually save the planet from alien invaders. Gotta love it.Parental Guide: One f-bombs (1 SOB) no sex, no real nudity. Brief sensuality. Brief Riseborough buttocks (?).
spoiler warning. 'Ideal' man (Cruise) and woman (Riseborough) live in a house in the sky. They have the job to repair the damage of rogue attacks on the water supplies of the massive spaceship that has saved surviving humans. So far so good, man goes out to do dangerous work, comes home and has sex with beautiful woman. So far so good, it's recognizable for brave soldiers and for the kids this film aims for. Only in Oblivion it's not a 4 months mission in the sand, it is an everyday happening. Danger and reward, all of it.An accident happens and Cruise takes back home another beautiful woman (Kurylenko). The soldiers and even the kids in the audience know: TROUBLE.Director of Photography Claudio Miranda photographed some very good films 'Benjamin Button', 'Life of Pi' and nothing is wrong with the photography in 'Oblivion'. Wrong are the many chiche's, wrong is the production that lays to much emphasis on effects, wrong is production design to slick, wrong in the end is the story that generates all the cliche's that are duly amplified by its main male antagonists turned protagonists played by Cruise and Freeman.
Brilliant writing; great performance by the actors; beautiful and realistic scenery; wit that makes us laugh, and a story we passionately follow with a proper ending that make us think about what does matter in life. What more can one want from a movie? 9 out of 10 for what may be one of the best movies ever made in this genre.
