As Good As It Gets
The story-telling is good with flashbacks. The film is both funny and heartbreaking. You smile in a scene and get a soulcrushing revelation in the next.
As far as films go, this is likable enough. Entertaining characters, good dialogue, interesting enough story. I would have really quite liked it had I not been irritated immensely whilst watching at the utter disrespect it shows the city it is set in.Glasgow. In Scotland. Yet every character is English (save for Sean's girlfriend, who is Dutch). Scottish accents are heard only fleetingly in menial jobs & roles. As a Scottish woman (& as a viewer who likes her "real life" films to be a bit more like real life) I really don't think it would have hurt to use any one of the countless talented Scottish actors...or at least got English ones who could toss together a decent accent! The futile attempt at using the word "wee" a few times did nothing but to further the insult.
I think the brilliance of this film is truly underrated... What other film truly states and understands the true nature of British late night work and life?!?! The concept is truly original and probably will never be repeated! I swear future generations will study this film in history class as a true representation of current working conditions of the late night worker. As a night worker myself i can completely relate to the state of mind of the 4 main cast members.. the sense of not quite being in the real world but not having the drive or mentality to change it for a 9-5 job! The characters are so believable and real you can relate to the situation completely and it ends up feeling that it could quite easily be you and your mates in real life rather than a fictional story I would Highly recommend this film for all that appreciate films such as Trainspotting, Human Trafic and all the cult British classics!
It's unfortunate that the only other review of this film on IMDB has the headline "Awful". I really hope that this won't make anyone think twice about checking out this brilliant film. I don't want to give away any MORE of the plot... but I will say that I saw 'Late Night Shopping' last night at the BritPics film festival in Toronto, Canada, and a completely packed theatre was thoroughly entertained for the full duration of the movie. The characters are somewhat classic, but each one has a unique twist... the cinematography is great... the dialogue is witty and original... It does require a bit of an imagination. As "Birmingham" points out in the other review, if you decide to over-analyze all of the details, then there are things that don't make sense. But really... lighten up a bit... it's a little on the silly side, but that's why it's so hilarious. If you can handle something a little offbeat and quirky... check it out.
This film could have been superb. It was very well directed and there was lots of potential in the script. Late Night Shopping starts off with four friends chatting away, late at night in a coffee shop. This is a very good way of being introduced to the different characters and their different personalities. The only problem is this goes on for too long, and its only after an hour something happens. Sean decides to travel to a small seaside resort to find his ex girlfriend and patch things up. This could have worked quite well, and it would have been interesting to have seen more of their travels and experiences rather than them ending up in another cafe after about 5 minutes.Another problem I had with this film was James Lance, who plays Vincent. He is not a very good actor, and seemed to over do everything. He sounded a bit as if he was trying to do a Michael Caine impersonation. When we got to a serious bit, when his friend in the supermarket dies, his distraught act was a little hard to believe. However, despite these problems, I quite enjoyed this film. Kate Ashfield is a fine actress, and I also enjoyed the performance of Enzo Cliente, who played Lenny. I would have liked to have seen a bit more of these two as they were by far the funniest characters and by far the best actors. It was also nice to see Norfolks finest, the very beautiful Sienna Guillory put in an appearance! Overall this was a well shot and decently acted film, but it was slightly frustrating thinking what might have been. 6/10
