Good , But It Is Overrated By Some
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
This is probably the best TV suspense/horror movie you'll ever see. John Mcginley who's always struck me as a very underrated but talented character actor plays a chilling cold hearted psychopath with such aplomb it rivalled jack nicholson's performance in the Shining. The 3 hours flew by and you just never knew what Mcginley's character would do next and if/how he would kill his next victim. Some people didn't like the plot holes that enabled Chyna (ably played by Molly Parker) to escape from Edgler's clutches but she was on a determined mission to save the little girl and had the foresight in the end to outwit Edgler. Incidentally, McGinley was also excellent in another Dean Koontz adaptation "sole survivor" as a maniacal FBI agent. For me he's wasted on scrubs and should have more leading man roles.
Intensity(1997) Staring John C. McGinley as the killer and Molly Parker as the terrorized girl. Haute tension(2003) and Intensity are both based on a Dean Koontz novel. It's basically the same story. Intensity is just so much better executed in every way. Better performances all-around and much more suspenseful but with less gore. Better shot and without the stupid plot twist at the end that Haute tension had. John C. McGinley gives a truly frightening performance as the serial killer. Great cameo by Piper Laurie. It's very, very good. One of the most suspenseful movies I've ever seen. And it doesn't let you out of it's grip even once for more than over it's 3 hour run. And it also being quite unknown for such a quality show makes it even more interesting and rewarding to watch. Almost better than all the great Stephen King mini series put together, and I'm a big, big fan of all the Stephen King miniseries. I think it's the realism of this movie that makes it so great and it's well drawn characters. Haute tension's got noting on the edge of the seat tension of Intensity. I probably would have liked Haute tension more if I had not seen this one first. Now Haute tension seems so very inferior compared to Intensity.I'm really confused by how such a great movie like Intensity has managed to stay so under the radar of the horror community. As of now there's no DVD release for this one. Which is a big shame when it comes to such a masterclass example of a suspenseful horror-thriller. This one really deserves the DVD treatment to give it some much deserved glory. I want to see a fully loaded 2 disk set with Special Features like a director commentary, deleted scenes, behind the camera documentaries and all that jazz.Until a DVD comes along, go out and find a VHS copy. You will find it most rewarding.
Sometimes when you read a book before seeing the movie the end result can be a disappointment... not so with "Intensity". This was a great movie that had all the characterisation of the book along with all the edge of your seat thrills and scares. I would definitely recommend that anyone who enjoyed this film read the book as there are a few details that obviously couldn't be translated to the screen. I read the book when I was about 15 and thought it would make a great movie and I was not wrong. Molly Parker makes a great Chyna, playing her with just the right balance of angst and ballsiness. Tori Paul's Ariel is just as I'd imagined her and the young actress's ability to play her with a constant look of absence could be described as somewhat haunting. But it is John C. McGinley, as the sadistic Edgler Foreman Vess, who really steals the show. I can think of no other actor capable of playing this character. The wonder of Edgler Vess is that at the same time as being an absolutely disgusting monster of a man he is also written as disarmingly charming. McGinley manages to play him perfectly. For anyone who has ever seen McGinley in "Scrubs" they should try to imagine his Dr. Cox with a penchant for actually doing all the things he threatens to do. From the moment we first see him in the movie we understand that here is a man with no limits to what he will do just to feel the intensity of the moment. It is not until a little further into the movie that you realise that Vess is actually a fully functioning member of the community who is actually quite adept at interacting with the people he meets in a slick and charming manner (if he so chooses.) Overall this is an excellent screen adaptation of a brilliant book. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys their thrillers with a slightly disturbing edge. Watch and enjoy!
I am utterly confused by this movie! I just saw it on "free" OnDemand on Comcast and it ended with the villain pointing a gun in the heroine's face and the words "To Be Continued..." However, I found no listing for any continuation on the OnDemand listings.I'm guessing that this was a multi-part made-for-TV movie...I'm new to OnDemand, but find it incredible that they'd offer PART of a multi-part movie, and not the rest!Talk about a cliffhanger! Does anyone know what's up here?!? I'd be satisfied just knowing that there IS more! Can I assume that, now that it's on cable, I could get it on DVD?
